Experts suggest this recall on a well known consumer snack could affect around 50 million Americans with certain dietary restrictions.

It’s the time of year when you can get away with a little indulgent snacking as part of the season. If you’re setting chips out as part of your festive spread, some consumers will want to be aware of a recall that’s just been posted about a salty bite that falls under the PepsiCo corporation.
On Tuesday, December 17, Kroeger posted a notice online that Lays Classic Potato Chips has been recalled in 13-ounce packages. The reason for the recall, as stated: “The product may contain milk and, if eaten, could result in severe allergic reactions in persons sensitive to milk.”
Cleveland Clinic food allergist Dr. Jaclyn Bjelac, MD, has called dairy milk “one of the most common food allergens in the United States, particularly in young children.” (She also notes that “about 80% of kids would outgrow a milk allergy.”)
Additionally, an estimated 30 million to 50 million Americans experience lactose intolerance, per Boston Children’s Hospital.
Kroger’s posting indicated that recalled Lays Classic Potato Chips product details are as follows:
- “Guaranteed Fresh Size,” 13 oz.
- UPC number: 28400-31041
Expiration dates
- 11 FEB 2025 (lot number 6462307xx)
- 11 FEB 2025 (lot number 6463307xx)
The announcement suggests that out of an abundance of caution, “Customers who purchased any of the item(s) below should not eat the product.” That’s especially true if you’re hosting guests or feeding a group—especially children.
The Healthy by Reader’s Digest spoke with an in-house representative for Frito-Lay, who stated the following about the recall: “It is fairly new,” and that it mainly “affects customers who are lactose intolerant.” The individual was not able to provide information on how the milk ingredient made it into the chips, and could not confirm whether the recall is nationwide or limited to Kroger. Brief research suggests that at press time, the recall announcement has not been made by larger grocery chains nor the US Food and Drug Administration.
Kroger has requested that the recall announcement remains live for public view until December 23, 2024. “Consumers may contact Frito-Lay Consumer Relations at 800-352-4477,” the announcement states.
Editor’s note: This story was updated on December 18, 2024 to reflect a Lay’s announcement that the chips were recalled in Washington and Oregon, not nationwide. In their recall announcement dated December 16, Lays reports the company discovered the issue “after being alerted through consumer contact.”
